With Valentine’s Day coming up I was inspired to create a small collection of Heart Art. Each work features a painted salt clay heart and a bit of hand cut text from vintage books.

One of my favorite parts about creating my mixed media art is searching through my stash of vintage books and finding just the right bit of text to add to a piece. It can be time consuming but I love the way combining cut text to compose quirky and meaningful little phrases makes each piece unique.

For this collection, I perused three different books and cut out phrases related to love and friendship.

Winds of Chance, a “thrilling, swashbuckling, and romantic story” from the 1920s features pirates who sail the Spanish Main and an “unwilling” passenger (a “young and spirited lady”), Billie Bradley at Treasure Cove (inside cover: To Peggy from Rita, Merry Christmas 1929), and The Happy Hollisters and the Secret Fort, (©1955) which has chapters entitled ‘The Kind Indian’ and ‘Tractor Overboard!’. Vintage novels provide such a unique glimpse into the past ~ both disturbing and enlightening.

With two petite shadowbox assemblages and four art blocks, this collection may be small in size but it’s big on love and color. I hope these pieces brighten your day, for Valentine’s Day and beyond!
